Basecamp Mobile

We wrote about Backpack Mobile a few months ago, the mobile version of 37signals’ Backpack. We’ve recently launched a mobile version of Basecamp, another 37signals project which we can’t live without. Try Basecamp Mobile here:
What’s the deal?
Basecamp is project management tool. The core features provide to-do lists, milestones and communication with clients through simple web-based messaging.
Since I’m often travelling around London, my phone offers the possibility of turning a train journey into productive time. I can’t exactly write software on the train… but I can manage Helicoid stuff thanks to Basecamp and Basecamp Mobile.
How does it work?
Use your phone’s web browser, or download Opera Mini if you don’t like your phone’s built-in browser, and load the URL:
Login with your Basecamp details. Make sure your Basecamp account has the API enabled under the ‘Account’ tab—you have to be the account owner to set this.
Basecamp Mobile uses the XHTML Mobile Profile to provide a lightweight version of Basecamp that your phone can handle. It uses Basecamp’s API to access your Basecamp data.
Where’s it going?
The future of Basecamp Mobile is an open source release, so you can install it on your server. There are some technical issues we want to get right before releasing it, so it works as a good example of using the Basecamp API efficiently and creatively.
If you love Basecamp, try it out! And if you haven’t tried Basecamp, are you sure you can live without it?
